Recession Looms: Are We Up the Creek Without a Paddle?
Dr. Stephanie Kelton
This talk will focus on the major debates taking place about whether the US is headed for recession and, if so, how policymakers will respond to the next downturn. Some people say the US is out of ammunition, both because interest rates remain too low to allow the Fed to do much to fight the next recession and because trillion-dollar deficits mean that Congress won’t be able to do anything on the fiscal side. Dr. Kelton will explore these arguments. The key takeaway will be that fiscal policy has plenty of capacity to fight the next recession, and it should be the primary policy level.
